LOTUS POND
A lotus pond and observatory greet you at the entrance to this garden. Sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) have naturalized in the pond.
PERENNIAL BORDER
In early May, this elevated mixed border features Euphorbia polychroma (cushion spurge) and Euphorbia palustris punctuated by Allium hollandicum 'Purple Sensation'.
WOODLAND & ROCK GARDENS
A woodland path leads to an open, rocky scree covered with Sedum acre 'Aureum', Sedum floriferum 'Weihenstephaner Gold' and Sedum sexangulare.
HILLSIDE OF FOAMFLOWER
A carpet of the native foamflower (Tiarella cordifolia 'Brandywine') covers this east-facing slope in the Woodland Garden in early spring.
WOODLAND SHADE GARDEN
The shade garden features stellar foliage and flowers. Bottom to top of photo: Darmera peltata (umbrella plant), Polygonatum (Solomon's seal), Actaea (snakeroot), and tall, fleecy white-flowering Polygonum polymorphum.
JAPANESE CANDELABRA PRIMROSE
Primula japonica in mixed colors co-mingle on a stream edge.
MOSS WALL
The magnificent moss-covered wall is reminiscent of Japan and the Pacific Northwest. A rocky path winds at its base.
STUDIO GARDEN
A modernist studio floats in a glaucous blue-green sedge lawn (Carex flacca 'Blue Zinger').
BOG PITCHER PLANTS
A boggy area in the garden features several hardy species of pitcher plants (Sarracenia leucopylla 'Tarnok' & Sarracenia 'Red Bug'), sedges, swamp azaleas, irises, and willows.
TEAHOUSE ENTRANCE
An earthenware pot is filled with water for Papyrus cyperus (umbrella plant) and floating water hyacinth.
FALL-BLOOMING TOAD LILY
A tall, 3-foot toad lily (Tricyrtis 'Sinonome') reveals unusual spotted, orchid-like flowers in fall. This sturdy cultivar is often seen as a cut flower in Japan.
POTS OF PINEAPPLE LILY, CANNA & PAPYRUS
